Japan Colonized Indonesia

In 1942 Japan colonized Indonesia, they had spread the word that they were the ‘Light of Asia’. Before Japan colonized Indonesia,  Indonesia was ruled by the Dutch. Over 300 years of Dutch rule in Indonesia had been swept away in a few weeks by Japan.

Initially, Japanese occupation was welcomed by the Indonesians as liberators. During the occupation, the Indonesia nationalist movement increased in popularity. Leading nationalists like Sukarno accepted Japan’s offer to rally the public in support of Japanese war effort.  The Japanese were cruel to Indonesians, Dutch and mixed Dutch were pacticular targets of the Japanese occupation. A later UN report stated that 4 million people died inIndonesia as a result of famine, torture, sex slavery, arbitrary arrest, execution and forced labor during the Japanese occupation, including 30,000 European civilian internee deaths.
